Sustainable Who?

Sep 7th, 2009 by PK

Sustainable Sellwood is you and your Community in SMILE.

We’re neighbors (new and old) that would like to build upon the amazing foundation we have here in Portland and more directly Sellwood/West Moreland.  SMILE, your overburdened volunteer organization deals with a flood of important issues every day.  Sellwood Bridge, Milwaukie Light Rail, Recoding and Zoning for Green Development, Willamette River, Sewer Pump Station, Climate Change, Bike Boulevards, Cut through traffic, etc…The list is endless.

Sustainable Sellwood was formed to help SMILE, neighbors and the community become as Sustainable as we’d like to be.  There are lots of individuals doing and visioning lots of wonderful things in the neighborhood.  Our goal is to facilitate these individuals’ efforts to make their local projects more rewarding with as much help as possible.

Our approach is simple.  Create a community social network based upon the virtues and positive energy of a Sustainable Lifestyle.  One way we’re doing this is through Green Drinks every First Wednesday at the Muddy Rudder at 6:00.  Another way is through Sustainable Sellwood meetings every Second Wednesday at The Blue Kangaroo at 8:30 am.  Sustainable Sellwood has had a variety of speakers at different venues and we expect to coordinate many more…Here’s a short list of future and past events:

April 7th at 6:00 pm Green Drinks with Mark Lakeman of The City Repair Project at The Muddy Rudder

April 14th at 8:30 am Sustainable Sellwood Meeting at The Blue Kangaroo

April 17th at 9:00 am Sustainable Sellwood Visioning Breakfast at Mark Lakeman’s home in Share-it Square.

May 5th at 6:00 PM Green Drinks with Mayor Sam Adams at The Muddy Rudder.

Past events include:

Oregon Attorney General John Kroger

Metro Councilor, Robert Liberty

Jon Sorenson of Neighborhood Natural Energy (N2e)

Beth Funsch and Helen Nolen of Sellwood Middle School Greenhouse Project

We’re always open to ideas, so feel free to contact us via phone at 971 322 8647, email @philip.krain@sellwood.org or drop by Green Drinks!
