Portland Garden Collective

The Portland Garden Collective is having a organizational meeting, at 7pm on October 8th at 1208 SE 34th Ave, Portland, OR. This group is committed to uniting local gardeners and providing access to local farmers markets to sell seasonal produce. We support organic gardening, permaculture design, and human-powered community building. So if you want to meet other plant nerds and help start a program focused on hyper-local food come join this planning meeting.  If you have any questions, contact South East Uplift.

The Farmer’s Market closes this Wednesday for the winter.  It’s the last chance for neighbors to take their styrofoam to the Farmer’s Market for recycling!  Styrofoam recycling initiative brought to you by Wallace Books, Moreland Farmer’s Market and SMILE!   Thanks Julie!

Great news!  Sustainable Sellwood will be meeting this Second Thursday at West Moreland resident, Judy Bluehorse’s home.  Her home is located at 1935 SE Harold Street.  We’ll gather at 7:00.  Judy is a renown permaculture expert and advocate.  We’re fortunate to be invited into her home for some great sustainable community chatting!

Sellwood neighbor and Sustainable Sellwood member, Brad Heintz has received funding, positive feedback and a strong go ahead for what will be called the Park to Park Walkway.  The idea is simply building in the infrastructure for safe pedestrian passage from Sellwood Park to Westmoreland Park.  It’s a concept that is ripe for success.  This safe passage will provide a way for children that may not be experienced enough to manage the streets in their present state.  This walkway could become a wonderful gathering place for the community, especially with the addition of community intersections.

Solarize at SMILE

Last month, the Energy Trust of Oregon’s, Lizzie Rubado came to SMILE to discuss a fantastic buying opportunity for residents and guests.  Lizzie has been managing the Solarize SE Portland Project which is creating a bulk buying opportunity for home owners throughout Portland.  We had a standing room only crowd with a substantial representation from SMILE residents!

In short, home owners are looking at the purchase of a solar photovoltaic system for a significant discount in price.  There are many reasons why these prices are low.  Among those reasons is the huge over supply of solar modules on the market as well as the bulk purchase order.  Imagine Energy is the contractor selected for execution of this project and they have committed themselves to $6.80 per Watt.  In solar terms, that extremely low, especially for a home installation.

The deadline to sign up for this group purchase was September 15th.  There were 335 people in this first round of participants.  But have no fear, as this looks like a very promising indicator of things to come.  In the meantime, if you’d like to learn more about solar for your home, please check out Solar Oregon.  It’s Oregon non-profit resource for learning about, advocating for and going solar.  Also, feel free to contact the folks at Sustainable Sellwood.  We’re planning a Sustainable Sellwood Homes Tour and solar will be plentiful.

BYHCP LogoYour neighbors at the last board meeting voted to go for the Gold with a Backyard Habitat Certification.  This is great news and a great opportunity for SMILE.  Your neighbors from the Sustainable Sellwood Committee, have been discussing an opportunity like this for quite some time.  We’re very fortunate to have Gaylen Beatty as a neighbor.  She’s the certification program director though Three Rivers Land Conservancy, and is helping guide your community through the process.  In addition, Joel Bader, an Americorps participant, has chosen SMILE Station as his Citizen Action Project.  They’re both part of a growing contingent of Sustainable Sellwood friends, advocates and volunteers.  For those interested in certifying their own home, being involved is a great opportunity to learn what will work at your home too!   (To find out more, click here!)

In short, they made a well detailed presentation with goals to be accomplished in multiple phases.  The three included within this presentation would earn us a Gold Backyard Habitat Certification.  The overall goal is to pull invasive and non-native plants and replace them with native plants that promote ecosystem development for birds, bats, insects and all kinds of creatures.  I’ll try to post the presentation on the Sustainable Sellwoodwebsite which can be viewed at: http://sustainable.sellwood.org/.

SMILE Station, for those new to the neighborhood, is one of the ways SMILE earns money to put on local events such as Sundae in the Park, concerts, etc…and it’s the neighborhood association headquarters.  SMILE Station, originally a firehouse, was built in 1926.  In 1959, the Old Engine 20 building began its second career as a clubhouse for the Boys and Girls Club. When that group vacated, your neighbors purchased it from the city and together renovated it for us to use.  After construction, Eileen Fitzsimons, through grants, getting dirty and getting together with friends replanted the grounds with the many natives we have now!

In addition to the new plantings, the addition of a bioswale to disconnect some downspouts will be a welcomed improvement.  Overtime, we’re anticipating bike racks, shelters, benches and a much more welcoming event space for your community gatherings.  Just like SMILE owned, Oaks Pioneer Church, the prices are reasonable and the location couldn’t be any better!

There’s a work party scheduled for October 27th and 28th.  There’s lots of work to do…but we have hired some help from a crew of AmeriCorps participants which will be onsite.  In addition to the work party, there will be information and discussions about how to go through the certification process.  We’re working on food for participants and families are encouraged to join us in getting dirty and making your Station more Sustainable.  Please join us!

Cheers,

PK
